BROOKINGS — On May 24, Nancy Stewart of the DAR Medary Chapter presented the Flag of the United States of America Certificate of Award to the Camelot Intermediate School on behalf of the Daughters of the American Revolution for the "proper use, correct display and patriotic presentation of the flag of the United States of America."
A special flag lapel pin was given to custodian James Folker to thank him for his personal care of the school flag.
The Medary Chapter members give out flag awards as part of the mission of the DAR to promote patriotism, education, and historic preservation.
Camelot Intermediate School was built in 2009 for grades 4-5 in Brookings.
There are currently about 560 students. The school uses the theme "Camelot" not only in the décor, but also in the curriculum.
When a student has put in five hours of volunteer time, they earn a letter that spells out the word Camelot. Upon completion of all seven letters, they are "knighted" and have earned the right to join the Knights of the Round Table (the Student Council) and their name is added to the list of "knights" painted on the wall in the lunchroom.
There is even a full, life-sized suit of armor in a display case.
On the sidewalk outside as you walk in, there are letters painted in random places, but if you know how to read them they spell out the school mottos: "Quest for success" and "Do the right thing."
